WHAT IS SELF EMPLOYED PROGRAMS?
Self-employed persons are individuals who are engaged in a business or profession, on their own account, and who control the means and manner of their work. To qualify as a self-employed person under the Business Immigration Program, an applicant must demonstrate that they have:
• The ability to become established in Canada as a self-employed person
• The intention and ability to establish a viable business in Canada.
The Canadian government defines “self-employment” very broadly, so most applicants should be able to find some way to demonstrate that they fall within this category. Some common ways of demonstrating eligibility include: owning and operating your own business; being a professional such as a doctor, lawyer or accountant; having a farming background; being a skilled tradesperson; or being involved in cultural activities.
If you can show that you have the ability, intention and ability to establish a business in Canada as a self-employed person, you may be able to qualify for Canadian permanent residence. The specific requirements will vary depending on which Business Immigration Program you apply under, but all programs have some common elements. For example, all applicants must submit detailed business plans demonstrating how they will become established in Canada as self-employed persons. In addition, all applicants must meet certain language and education requirements.
The Self-Employed Persons program is one of several options available through the Business Immigration Program.
